Is Christmas art kitsch or inspiring?
I was curious how artists were fairing in creating wondrous Christmas themed art. Yet despite my best Saturday morning browsing – Christmas art yielded very few quality items! Was I missing something in my browsing technique?
Once you remove the traditional church stained glass, Christmas art appears relegated to home decor and traditional kitsch rather than inspirational fodder for the artist community.

When children in Camberley Sussex set out to do a little Christmas shopping at the Atrium Mall in Camberley, Sussex they got more than they bargained for. For right ouside, below ground was an ice grotto going down deep in to the pavement with Santa Claus warming his hands over an open fire! He was not alone. Around him were his elven helpers busy making presents in an Arctic workshop and his reindeer impatient to be off on deliveries. But were they all really underground? In fact this was the work of world famous pavement artist Julian Beever who had created the entire illusion on the pavement using only chalk. The drawing took 4 days and was kept dry through heavy rain below a special tent provided by the Atrium. Beever says, “My work is all about trying to capture childhood wonder, so what better subject than this at this time of year?”. The picture will be open to view outside The Atrium in Camberley until Christmas day.
