It never ceases to amaze me how our outer environment and activities motivate our inner creative self! For me, seeing art through a first world lens often leads me into the world of pretty .. it is not a conscious decision but one my inner self is most at peace with, comfortable with and naturally attracted to.
The immediate environment influences our artist lens and our creative work, this is the domain of the modern artist .. their influences are a direct reflection of life and society as we know it at the time. I remember looking at Kandinsky in a new light when I looked at the world around him at the time .. hard lives, post WW1 chaos, masses of seamingless destruction of humankind. No wonder his works represent the human emotion of the day, a jungle of confusion, issues, angst and trying to make sense of it all.
Wassily Kadinsky: above 1913 immediately after WW1 and full of chaos; below 1923 between the world wars and beginning to be somewhat more orderly?
Here is Australia we are blessed in an era of peace, comfort, first world lifestyles, no famine, no war. Our nearest real threat we see on the tv news, our daily existence is all things pretty. My day to day life is all things relaxing and not suffering illness, poverty or immense sadness. I cannot help but be drawn to the heavenly beauty of all things creative. Lucky lucky me.
Always the artist
